Foundations Workshops
Go deeper. Build understanding. Expand your practice.
Foundations is a monthly workshop series designed to help you explore your practice beyond the weekly class. Each workshop aligns with Spiral Studio's monthly theme, seasonal rhythms, and mantra, offering an opportunity to slow down, get curious, and take a deeper dive into the physical, mental, and embodied aspects of movement.
Return to Rhythm
September 2
As summer shifts into the routines of school, work, and a new season, we return to the supportive structures that help us find our rhythm. In this workshop, we'll explore standing yoga poses inspired by some of nature's most powerful symbols: Mountain, Tree, Star, and Half Moon.
Each shape offers a different way to explore balance—not as something fixed or perfect, but as a dynamic practice of responding, adapting, and finding our way back to center.
Mountains may appear immovable and ever-present, yet they are constantly shaped by wind, weather, and time. The weather at the summit may be turbulent while the valley below is calm and full of life. Trees are rooted and resilient, adapting to the conditions around them while reaching outward and upward toward connection and possibility. Stars have long served as guides and beacons, reminding us that even what feels distant can help us find our way. And the moon continually shifts through its cycles, offering a reminder that change is not the opposite of stability—it is part of it.
Through movement, breath, and reflection, we'll explore the dynamic balance between steadiness and change. We'll move from the physical experience of static and dynamic balance into personal reflection and collective vision, asking: What structures help us find our rhythm? What helps us stay grounded while we adapt? And how might we cultivate balance that supports life as it changes?
Together, we'll explore practices that build self-trust, resilience, and connection—creating a supportive foundation for navigating the shifting rhythms of our lives.
Wherever you are in your practice, you're welcome here. Please bring water, any additional items that support your personal practice, and a journal if you'd like to reflect.
Root for the Season Ahead
October 7
As summer eases into fall, this workshop invites you to slow down and reconnect with your foundation before the busier season ahead. We'll spend time exploring our pose of the month, Warrior II, breaking it down layer by layer: foot placement, hip alignment, the steady gaze over the front hand, and the quiet strength of the back leg rooting down. Through guided drills, partner feedback, and slow, exploratory flow, you'll deepen your understanding of what makes this foundational pose so powerful — building not just flexibility, but real, grounded strength.
Beyond the physical, we'll weave in reflection and breath-work centered on the workshop's theme: what do you need to root into as the seasons shift? Expect time for journaling or quiet contemplation alongside the movement.
Whether you're brand new to Warrior II or have practiced it for years, this workshop will give you fresh tools to root down, stand tall, and carry that steadiness into the months ahead.
Wherever you are in your practice, you're welcome here. Please bring water, any additional items that support your personal practice, and a journal if you'd like to reflect.
Gratitude and Warmth
November 4
As the year draws to a close, this workshop invites us to slow down and notice what is already here. We'll explore the practice of gratitude through simplicity, abundance, and reciprocity—considering what it means to have enough, to recognize what sustains us, and to trust that we are enough.
Our physical exploration will center on Camel Pose, using supported variations and backbending practices to explore opening through the heart, chest, and front body. We'll work with breath, alignment, and mindful preparation to build both physical and embodied awareness, discovering how we can create space without forcing or striving.
Beyond the physical practice, we'll reflect on gratitude as an embodied practice rather than simply an attitude or habit. How does shifting our attention toward appreciation affect the way we experience ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us? How might gratitude become a practice of reciprocity—one that invites us not only to notice what we receive, but to consider what we have to offer?
We'll draw inspiration from Indigenous scholar and author Robin Wall Kimmerer's question: "What do you have an abundance of, and how will you share it?" Together, we'll explore how gratitude can help us recognize abundance in simplicity, cultivate connection, and move into the next season with greater warmth and generosity.
Wherever you are in your practice, you're welcome here. Please bring water, any additional items that support your personal practice, and a journal if you'd like to reflect.
Rest in Stillness
December 2
As the pace of life picks up, this workshop offers permission to slow all the way down. We'll spend our time exploring our asana of the month, supine twist, in depth: how gentle rotation through the spine can release tension, support digestion, and calm the nervous system. Using props (bolsters, blankets, blocks), you'll be guided through several variations of the twist, each held long enough to soften into — no rushing, no forcing, just time to breathe and let go.
Interwoven with the physical practice will be moments of true stillness: extended holds, guided relaxation, and quiet breath-work designed to help you drop out of "doing" mode and into rest. We'll close with an extended savasana, giving your body and nervous system full permission to integrate the practice.
Wherever you are in your practice, you're welcome here. Please bring water, any additional items that support your personal practice, and a journal if you'd like to reflect.
